Build and publish a survey

Pick a question type or a template, arrange your questions, and publish when you're ready.

Open Surveys and choose New survey. The guided page starts from what you want to learn and suggests a template that fits; Skip to blank survey and Use a template are one click away. Then change anything before you publish. New here? Read Build your first survey.

Question types

Nine types cover most surveys:

  • Multiple choice: pick one answer from a list
  • Checkboxes: pick any number of answers
  • Dropdown: pick one from a long list
  • Short text: a word, a name, an email or a number
  • Long text: open-ended comments
  • Star rating: rate from 1 to 5 (or up to 10) stars
  • Net Promoter Score: how likely to recommend, 0–10
  • Likert scale: strongly disagree to strongly agree
  • Matrix grid: rate several items on the same scale

Skip logic

On a multiple choice or dropdown question, open Skip logic underneath it and send any answer straight to a later question, or to the end of the survey. Skip logic only ever jumps forward, so a survey can't loop.

Display and progress

In the survey's settings inside the builder, choose whether respondents see one question per screen or all questions on one page, and turn the progress bar on or off.

Autosave and publishing

The builder saves your draft as you go. Watch for Saved next to the title. Nothing changes for respondents until you publish. Publishing snapshots the current draft as a new version, so editing and republishing a live survey never changes the responses you've already collected.

Status

A survey moves through draft, scheduled, live, paused, closed and archived. Scheduling sets an open and close time automatically; otherwise use the Status menu on the survey to pause, close, reopen or archive it by hand.

Save as template, in the survey's Settings tab, turns any survey into a starting point anyone in your organization can reuse.
